Cultural Impact on on Parent-Child Relationships

America is the most varied nation in the world with migrants from countries such as Mexico, China, Vietnam, Philippines, etc . Families coming from these diverse regions have a problem with trying to balance their new American culture without losing touch with their homeland customs. A serious obstacle is maintaining a wholesome relationship among parents and children-- especially adolescents. It is difficult enough for parents and teenagers to be on the same page, but even more so when ever there is a big difference in principles and practices. Parents make an effort to keep their native rules by instilling them within their children, which usually creates discord because children are more exposed to the American society. Although both parties attempt to juggle two different nationalities, there are many road blocks that inhibit them via having healthy parent-child associations. One burden to interactions between parents and teenagers is the use of different languages. Although some children are able to speak or figure out their local language, not every choose to communicate with their parents that way. In a study that examined parent-adolescent language use and interactions among zuzugler families, they found that English speaking families encounter more conflict compared to indigenous speaking people from Asian Pacific or perhaps Latin American backgrounds in whose language is structured around respect toward parents (Tseng & Fuligni, 2000). For example, Filipino's Tagalog language features certain conditions for parents such as " Kuya” which means older brother, although is also utilized to address any older man peer. The association of " Kuya” to a sibling as well as a stranger, shows a level of respect Filipinos have got for each different whether they are in reality blood-related or not.
